Almost certainly, if your mother sees you putting turmeric into a milkshake, she’ll ask you why. This is because, until very recently, here in the West, we only attributed to turmeric its ability to colour our dishes, as well as its powerful aroma and flavour. It definitely adds a unique touch to our recipes but, without a doubt, turmeric is one superfood that must always be present in our cupboards.
New it is not. Turmeric has been amongst us for more than 2,000 years since being discovered in southwestern India. The Herbaceous plant (from the Zingiberaceae family), can grow to over a metre tall and develop beautiful, colourful flowers, of which we know very little. It is the root of this plant which is most desired and where we find our superfood.
Its use as a textile dye allowed it to travel 5 centuries BC through Southeast Asia, the Pacific, China and perplex Marco Polo due to its immense power.
It’s considered a superfood for its impressive ability as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal, perfect to prevent and recover from digestive issues such as heartburn or colic.
Above all, turmeric is being investigated by researchers for its incredible power to reduce melanomas in cases of skin cancer, improve live damage and prevent Alzheimer’s, amongst other problems. Its ability to attack cancer cells has left everyone shocked, as well as its potential to heal issues you didn’t even know you had.
Turmeric doesn’t have a very strong taste which allows you to add it to most of your dishes without noticing the flavour, although it’s visible through its unique colour.
If you want to eat something rich in the morning for breakfast, prepare a rich “golden milk” with a vegetable drink, turmeric, pepper (which activates the benefits of turmeric) and cinnamon. It will become your new favourite morning routine.
*Provided it is of high quality and organic, to keep its authentic properties.
